Wade In   (new section)

Have you ever wanted to share a compelling idea, or draw attention to an issue affecting your business? We've begun a new section in our newsletter called Wade In! :

Last month we had an article in Top Stories by Shane Mulligan of the Federation of Community Power Co-operatives, called Community Power Co-ops Join Forces in Ontario's Green Energy Struggle.

In response to Shane's article, we've shared a thought-provoking commentary submitted by James Van Leeuwen of Ventus Development Services in Pincher Creek Alberta, entitled Will Alberta FIT In?

James discusses potential implications of Alberta adopting (or not) a feed-in-tariff program like Ontario's, and we encourage all of you to share your own thoughts on Alberta or any other province 'FITting In'.

Go ahead folks... wade in!

Forward all Wade In! submissions to Ana Medina at

  Will Alberta FIT in?
By James Van Leeuwen
Published September, 2012

Thanks to massive investments in photovoltaic (PV) solar panel production in the U.S. andChina, costs to deploy solar power around the globe are dropping rapidly.

Today, a static five-kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic solar power array for my south-facing roof wouldcost around $3,000 per kW to install, or $15,000 total. Here in sunny Pincher Creek Alberta, anarray with this capacity would generate at least 6,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electrical power annually.

Article Note: A feed-in tariff or FIT is a straightforward way to contract for distribution-connected energy generation. Feed-In Tariffs are currently offered in BC, Nova Scotia, Ontario and PEI, with Ontario considered the most progressive energy policy in Canada. Ontario's Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Program was launched in 2009 to create new clean energy industries and jobs, boost economic activity and the development of renewable energy technology, and to improve air quality by phasing out coal-fired generation by 2014.The 4th Ontario Feed-In Tariff Forum is scheduled for April 3-5, 2013 in Toronto.

Decentralized Energy: new tricks for an old dog

"DE technology isn't new or unproven..."
"The value of the Alberta market alone is in the billions"

By Anouk Kendall and Kevin Franksowski
Published September, 2012

Decentralized energy (DE) is a concept that has been understood and used for at least 130 years. DE is a primary source of both residential heating and hot water, with natural gas DE systems servicing over 50% of Canadian homes, in the form of standard furnaces and hot water heaters. DE technology isn't new or unproven - however, the DE sector has not experienced the technological transformation that has reinvigorated other sectors.

What Is It Like to Live Next to a 136-Megawatt Wind Farm?
Get It Straight From the Horse's Mouth

By Dave Dodge
Published September 25, 2012
Source: Huffington Post

Heidi Eijgel is an Alberta horse farmer who lives in the last house at the end of a gravel road surrounded by one of the largest wind farms in Alberta - and she's ok with that. In 2003, the 70 megawatt Summerview wind farm was built adjacent to Eijgel's property. She has been peacefully co-existing with that wind farm since 2003. In 2010 an additional 66 megawatts of wind energy was installed. We went to Eijgel's horse farm northeast of Pincher Creek to find what that it was like to have a wind farm developed next door.

Success in Solar Begins with Informed Practitioner

By Greg Smith
Published September, 2012
Source: North American Clean Energy

As the North American solar industry grows, so will the necessity for a safe, efficient, and effective workforce. The kind of training required for this field is as varied as the backgrounds of the people who are making the leap toward a future where renewable energy will compete with oil, coal, and nuclear power. Many news sources report significant growth for the PV industry in 2011, with most estimates exceeding 40%. It stands to reason, therefore, that the demand for trained installers, roofers, electricians, designers, engineers, and salesmen, etc., will also increase.
